Gabriel Amargant, Saxophones and clarinet

 

Born in 1986 in Argentona (Barcelona). He began his musical training at the music school of the same village and later at the Conservatory of Granollers specializing in classical clarinet and jazz saxophone with teachers Carles Riera and Llibert Fortuny.

 

In 2007 obtained a special mention in the Intercentros Melómano national competition held in Madrid.

 

In 2008 he graduated with honors at the School of Superior Music of Catalunya, at which he is given classes by Xavi Figuerola, Eladio Reinón and Gorka Benitez. It has also receives classes by Erich Hoeprich clarinetists, Josep Fuster, Joan Enric Lluna and Colin Lawson. Also saxophonists Stan Sulzman, Seamus Blake and Chris Cheek.

 

His multi formation and mastery of different instruments have made him a versatile player, able to participate in musical projects of very different styles: from collaborations with symphony orchestras and big bands soundtrack recordings, through projects with jazz bands , rock, pop, flamenco or rap.

 

Some of these projects have allowed him to play at venues and festivals such as the Auditori de Barcelona, Palau de la Música, Teatro Real in Madrid or Carnegie Hall, Festival de Jazz de Barcelona, Madrid Jazz Festival, Festival de Jazz de Terrassa, Pirineos Sur, Marciac jazz Festival, Enjoy jazz Festival of Heidelberg and Cap Roig.

 

In 2009 presents "First Station" (Fresh Sound New Talent), his first album as leader in the Festival de Jazz de Barcelona getting very good response from audiences and critics and received the Musician of the Year award granted by the Association of Jazz and Modern Music of Catalonia (AMJM).

 

Currently combines his musical activity with teaching in the ESEM Taller de Musics in Barcelona, preparing what will be his second album as a leader, also published by Fresh Sound, with a quintet formed by Adria Plana, Marco Mequida, Miguel Serna and Gonzalo del Val also belongs to the flamenco jazz group Oleándole.
